As a child Rose grew up with a variety of small and large dogs. She attended her first obedience group classes offered by a local kennel club near Ashland, Pennsylvania in 1980. Since then, Rose has worked with dogs for over 25+ years in a variety of settings since. Her interest grew with Canine Good Citizen and AKC obedience. In 1982 she began training her first German shepherd Shelly for wilderness search and rescue with cadaver and water specialties.
As her interest search and rescue grew; she joined several different local search and rescue teams, served as past secretary for the Pennsylvania Search & Rescue Council and was a founding member of the Pennsylvania based American Rescue Dog Association (ARDA) group. In 1995, she joined the Pennsylvania Search & Rescue Task Force 1 as a Canine Search Specialist and is one of the remaining original K9 Handlers today. PATF1 is one of the 26 member Department of Homeland Security/Federal Emergency Management Agency task force teams in the USA designed specifically to find and rescue people trapped in disaster situations from natural tragedies such as earthquakes, hurricanes or man made disasters of bombings or terrorist attacks.
In 1996 her dog Logan was the second dog to be certified in Pennsylvania as a Type 2 Disaster Search Canine. They worked the Hurricane Floyd deployment on the east coast in North Carolina in September 1999 with PATF1. Along with many other rescuers and K9 teams from around the world, they worked the first nine days of the World Trade Center tragedy on 9/11 with the Task Force. Logan passed away in December of 2005 after a long and rewarding career as a search & rescue dog; a link to her memorials can be found on the links page.
Faza is now following in Logan’s paw prints and certified as a Type 1 as a Disaster Search Canine Massachusetts in November 2005. Faza and Rose also responded with PATF1 to Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts in fall of 2005. Along with the disaster training, Faza is also working Schutzhund sport- handler owner trained, and is SchH3 (pronounced) and BH titled. Rose has successfully raised working puppies in active use by police departments and is currently raising 4 working puppies, 3 which are from the Faza and Czibor litter born in March 2007 .
Rose is also a CKC Canine Good Neighbour Evaluator and a rostered Evaluator & Mentor for the Disaster Search Canine Readiness Evaluation Process for DHS/FEMA in the USA.
After marrying and moving to Ontario, Canada, Rose still keeps strong commitment disaster training and evaluating in the USA as well as training for USAR in Ontario. She also belongs to the Canadian Association of Professional Pet Dog Trainers; a network to many other dog training professionals throughout Canada. She also enjoys training and competing in the sport of Schutzhund, training for competitive agility and obedience titles.
Rose teaches motivational Obedience Classes, Puppy Kindergarten, Agility, Canine Good Neighbour and a variety of other services at the Cold Creek Shepherds training field near Stockdale, Ontario. She enjoys working with all types of dogs and has taught the owners of over 70+ different breeds in year round classes there. She is always striving to learn new techniques for teaching and training to understand dog language for better communication.
